An Unusual Love.
by Ryan Leong

It was neither the coldness of the ground nor the aching of my heart I felt. It was the warmth of her love. Drawing slow deep breaths, I realized it did not hurt as much as I thought it would. I could recall her last words; they were like a tune playing endlessly in mind. I recall my life so far as I lay dying. I am dying at an awfully young age. My name is Gabriel. This is my story.

They say life is like a story book. My idea of stories? There are no happy endings. If there were happy endings, something bad would happen to make it sad or bad. My story ended badly. I kept on remembering Dawn’s face. Even as she lay dying on the hospital bed, dying, she still had that radiant smile. Her smile reminded me of the dawn. Like sunrise, it brought me happiness.

Dawn was my wife. We met a year ago. We were working at the same place. Her cubicle was opposite mine. We often chatted during that time and I summoned all my courage to ask her out. After that, everything was smooth sailing. We started dating and eventually got married. Then, things started to spin out of control. It started on our honeymoon. It was supposed to be the best day ever. It was the worst.

We were on our way to our honeymoon location. The sky was bright and the day was beautiful. We drove off into the highway leaving all our troubles behind. Halfway into our journey, Dawn started coughing a lot. I got worried and pulled over. Her coughs got worse as the minutes ticked by. I turned the car around and drove to the hospital. She did not stop.

That was the day of our so called ‘honeymoon’. Still lying on the ground. A group of people crowding around me started gawking. They just stared at me with no intention to help. That was what I wanted them to do. I did not want to live anymore. I was sick and tired of it. I just wanted to pass off quickly. The next thing I remembered was the day the doctor gave the test results.

It was that musty smell and white wash walls that made me feel sick. I bit my lip and drew deep breaths. A few drop of sweat tricked down my forehead. I was waiting for the results of Dawn’s medical test. The solemn doctor approached me. By the look on his face, I could safely say that he had bad news for me. He said that Dawn had cancer. The threat was undetected and she was in the final stages. She would die. She had only a few days left in her life. The doctor left. I just stood there, lost, not knowing what to do.

A young man in a smart white uniform started to check me. He shone a light at my eyes. Before I knew it, I was lifted onto a stretcher. I tried to tell them to leave me but all that came out was a sound like, “Mmm…..” My brain clicked. Not literally but metaphorically. I remembered the day that Dawn left this world.

The faint beeping of the machine told me that Dawn did not have much time left. She lay on the hospital bed, dying. Even though she was dying, she still looked beautiful. She smiled. I gripped her arm. She was about to say her last words. She whispered in my ear. Then my mind went blank. The only thing in my mind was the continuous dead beep of the machine.

That is the story. The tragic tale. This is romance in a different way. Not your typical “boy meets girl” and “lived happily ever after” story. As the ambulance sped of f to the hospital with me in it, I realized something. Dawn would not have wanted this for me. Dawn would not have wanted me to jump off a thirty-storey building. But then again, I was wrong. It was that familiar sound.

The continuous dead monotonous beep.

oh and i must add, any similarity in the names of the characters and of those in real life are purely coincidental and was not used with any intent. and no animals or people were hurt in this production. HAHA.

so, what do you think? :D
